Hailing from Corpus Christi, Texas, the alternative rock band formed in 2018 and didn’t waste any time getting demos recorded and playing live shows. ‘Gold’ is the fourth EP to be released from the quartet following their EPs ‘Time’, ‘EmOcean’ and ‘Searching Shorelines’.
The EP opens with ‘Meant for More’, an energetic track that has a powerful emotional undertone. This seems to be something that runs throughout the three tracks on the EP; it all feels very personal. Their sound has a strong pop-punk edge to it, partially through the distinctive vocals belonging to Mitch. The guitar tones they use blend wonderfully and give their music a nice solid, distorted wall of sound. ‘Everything’s Upside Down’ gives a nice contrast with the slower pace showing a different side to their sound from the high energy of ‘Meant for More’. The cleaner guitar tones also bring a different feel, but the return of heavier distortion keeps this track cohesive to the EP. This track plays with the dynamics of their sound nicely.
The title track ‘Gold’ opens with a nice percussion solo – not enough releases give the drums space (in my humble opinion). It really brings the percussion to the forefront; the rhythm in the verse combined with the guitars gives the music a dramatic feel. The chorus has a slightly more stripped back feel with the arrangement of the instrumentation and it works really well, and the bridge is another interesting development musically; again playing with the dynamics. Following this, the heavy breakdown is rather delicious!
This may only be a three track EP but Lost & Faded have crammed a fair amount into each song. They show off the range of their sound from the heavy to the emotional. The title track is my personal favourite as it feels like the guys really let their hair down with this one!
