Monday 9th March 2020 saw the return of the International Women’s Day conference held as part of the University’s Diversity festival. Since studying at the University of Chester, this conference has been an annual event that I always look forward to! It’s wonderful to hear inspirational stories and discussions from women of all backgrounds and industries.

Issues of equality affect everyone in every industry. There have been great changes across the music industry in increasing equality but there is still a way to go. I’m sure many of you have seen the recent rise in discussions over the term ‘Female Fronted’ as a description for bands with female vocalists (and has been misused as a genre label). I won’t go into detail over this topic just at the present, but it’s important to be aware of the issues in the music industry and work towards creating a fairer environment for everyone and ever position in music.
