se7en: atmospheres of unsettling tension and the horrors that ensue, the new EP from JoeyDiabolic, follows hot on the heels of mute. Released on the 6th of June, 2022, solo artist and multi-instrumentalist mute is a dynamic offering including instrumental renditions, and a thematic reprise, of select compositions featured throughout the 3-year ‘Through Soundwaves’ series. se7en is an offering of new tracks and remixes, including guest Mama Doom on ‘Nightmare’.
JoeyDiabolic has been serving up heady, post-goth since 2019. Originally performing as Martyr Art (previously Dislocate), JoeyDiabolic merged his talents as a producer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, engineer and multimedia artist to create a truly unique sonic landscape. Diabolic records every instrument and completes the entire production process as well, forging compositions that are all his own. His cinematic works infuse rock, goth, 80’s horror, metal, synth wave and post-hardcore into an unexpected tapestry of sound.
Opening with ‘Welcome To The Upside Down‘, se7en creates an immersive atmosphere that builds eerily into Diabolic‘s signature sound. Dynamic soundscapes are the prominent aspects of this release, and choosing to introduce the new EP with an instrumental track allows the electronics to sink in, before the metal instrumentation bursts through. ‘A Forest (L-426 Distress Edit)‘ brings a manifestation of ghostly whispered vocals accompanied by rumbling synths and a strong industrial edge. Harsh vocals enhance the heaviness, appearing sparingly throughout the track. ‘Nightmare feat. Mama Doom (VoE Remix)‘ deviates into gothic realms with the presence of Mama Doom‘s soaring and sultry vocals balance harmoniously against the harsh, electronic fuelled backdrop. Including a wide array of synth tones and textures, Diabolic produces expansive sounds. se7en explores a wide range of musical styles, ‘Dead Souls That Lost Their Way Home‘ is progressive in style with instrumental parts somewhat reminiscent of Pink Floyd. Powerful lyrics can be found in ‘Save Yourself (Vogue Edit)‘ which unapologetically unleashes a haunting darkness. The poignant chorus showcases a deeply personal notion. Once again, Diabolic explores different elements across each of the tracks included on se7en. The penultimate ‘From Dusk Till Dawn‘ sees razor-edged synths and percussion combine into a spooky composition that rises and falls dynamically. ‘Disillusion‘ closes the EP with a hard-hitting metal assault. Chaotic samples and vocal snippets appear among the intensely distorted rhythm guitars which drive the track with a powerful momentum. Falling suddenly into a solo piano melody, it’s a juxtaposing ending which aptly fits this release’s character of expecting the unexpected.
se7en is a thrilling journey through nightmarish worlds and horror stories. The EP wonders between a number of moods and atmospheres, each one evoking a different response. This smorgasbord of styles and sounds combines into a charismatic offering of JoeyDiabolic‘s musicality and creativity.
