The world of music PR can be difficult to negotiate if you are new to it. Here are a few FAQs to help explain what music PR is all about and how it could be useful to you.

What is Music PR?

PR (public relations) for music involves the promotion of your music, typically involving sending your music, news or announcements to relevant contacts for reviews and features. The point of this is to build up as much awareness of your band and new release/ event/ news as possible. This also involves social media promotion, radio plugging and arranging interviews.

Are Results Guaranteed?

The results from PR campaigns cannot be guaranteed. The volume of music submissions journalists receive, and factors such as personal preference, can mean that contacts do not choose to feature your music. This does not mean that your music is bad! It can be disheartening not gaining the results you would like but this is not a direct reflection on you. Because of this, you will always receive promotion and features on Deviate PR’s website and social media at the very minimum.

Why should I Use a Music PR company?

PR companies have contacts within the music industry that they have built up over time. They will have a large number of contacts and strong relationships that mean results are more likely to be guaranteed than going it alone. However, there is nothing to stop you having a go at your own PR. Deciding to use a PR company is something you will need to consider based on your personal circumstances.

How do I Choose a Music PR company?

Research is key! Check that they specialise in your genre, read reviews/ testimonials and most importantly talk to them! Any questions – make sure you ask to ensure if they are right for you; that you trust them and feel comfortable working with them. Deviate PR specialises in rock and metal and therefore has strong contacts in these areas. Deviate PR would not be suitable for an R’n’B group as I don’t have the contacts and would not be able to get as wider reach. Be aware of marketing, for example a company may state they have 5000 contacts. However, they may not be relevant to you; not all contacts will be appropriate for each band. What am I Paying for With a Music PR Company?

You are paying for their knowledge of the music industry, their contacts which have been built up over months (more likely years!), and most importantly their time. PR is time consuming work. This also links back to the question on what results to expect. The cost of PR does not involve guaranteed results, as previously stated. Please bear this in mind when looking for PR.
