Spectral Release Enthralling Cover of ‘Midnight Sky'
Exploring the shadows through gothic rock, cinematic electronics and powerful yet vulnerable vocal performances, UK based act Spectral deliver modern and immersive soundscapes. Following the release of the debut EP 12:12, Spectral present their compelling take on Miley Cyrus's 'Midnight Sky', the first of two cover releases arriving this Spring.
Fletch comments on the new release: "Choosing covers is such a challenge, given you have the entire history of music lying before you! I was keen that we picked something well known that people could sing along to.
There were a few other tracks I'd been playing around with, but 'Midnight Sky' just kept floating into my head at all times of day and night. So, I knew it was the right choice. The usual dilemma is whether to approach the song by making it as similar as possible or radically reinventing it to tell a different story.
Initially I tried to do the latter, but everything took away from what made it special! So, I really just focused on building up a bit more atmosphere. The vocal FX are one of my favourite things. There's a really fun bit where it almost sounds more like an industrial synth than a vocal line."
Vocalist Clark Kelly adds "The wonderful thing about Spectral is, we freely admit to loving all types of music. Whether it's industrial, rock, or pop. 'Midnight Sky' is our love letter to catchy pop hooks and 80's synths."
About Spectral:
Hailing from the deep dark heart of Northern England. Spectral unleashed their haunting electronic rock soundscapes in the autumn of 2025 with their debut EP 12:12. Blending their signature concoction of dark cinematic synth rock, laden with samples, grinding guitars, and achingly vulnerable vocals. Honed by industry virtuosos, producer JJ Catalyst (Mothica and Hollywood Undead) and Ruairi O’Flaherty (Lana Del Rey, Paramore and Kendrick Lamar) on mastering. Lead single ‘Saints of Excess’ hit with its fusion of high energy gothic alternative rock and charged clandestine confessions; with second single ‘Falling’ giving way to a deeply emotive, symphonic ballad with lush undertows of soul wrenching melodies.
2026 will see the evolving of Spectral’s dark aesthetic and high energy production, with the release of their love letters to the world of pop and metal, ‘Midnight Sky’ and ‘Even in Arcadia’ during the Spring. Their highly anticipated follow up to 12:12 is expected this autumn. Amidst the noisy backdrop of societal upheaval, this may be a venture into a dystopian dreamscape.
